Tengwang Pavilion stands on the east bank of the Gan River in Nanchang, Jiangxi. First built in 653 during the Tang dynasty for Li Yuanying, Prince of Teng, it owes its fame to Wang Bo's preface, whose line about sunset clouds flying with a lone duck is still recited today. Destroyed and rebuilt twenty-nine times, the present pavilion dates from 1989: 57.5 metres high in Song-dynasty style, its visible three storeys with belt eaves conceal seven levels within. Together with the Yellow Crane Tower and Yueyang Tower it ranks among the three great towers of Jiangnan.
