Hongya Cave hangs above the Jialing River in Yuzhong, Chongqing, modelled on the traditional diaojiaolou stilted buildings of the Ba-Yu region. Eleven storeys of pavilions step down the cliff for about 75 metres, with streets at the top and bottom stacked one above the other. The stilted house is the wisdom of mountain architecture - timber posts lift the rooms off the damp slope, and tiered terraces dissolve the height difference. Opened as a folk-features district in 2006, its lantern-lit night view has become the icon of the vertical mountain city.
