The Drum Tower of Xi'an, built in 1380 in the Ming dynasty, stands at the heart of the old city and is the largest and best-preserved drum tower in China. Raised on a rectangular brick base, the 34-metre timber pavilion spans seven bays, with triple-tiered eaves under a green glazed roof and dense dougong brackets; two great plaques - Civil and Military Flourishing Land, and Sound Reaching Heaven - hang at its centre. Once the timekeeper of the whole city, it faces the Bell Tower along the ancient axis of Xi'an.
