Sydney Opera House sits on Bennelong Point. Danish architect Jorn Utzon won the 1957 competition with his shell scheme, and the building opened in 1973. Three groups of white shells, cut from a single sphere and clad in 1,056,006 glossy Swedish ceramic tiles, rise like sails above the podium, with the concert hall and opera theatre at either end. Solving the shell structure was tortuous, finally achieved with precast concrete ribs. Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2007, it is regarded as a masterpiece of twentieth-century architecture.
